WHAT SHOULD I UPGRADE AND WHY?

Processor
Fast processor (or CPU for Central Processing Unit) is needed for a computer to carry out complex tasks more quickly. The faster processor, the better overal performance of your system.

Intel® Pentium® 4
The Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, now available up to 3.6 GHz on high-end models, is the next evolutionary step for desktop processor technology. The Pentium 4 processor offers higher-performance processing than ever before. Built with Intel's technology, the Pentium 4 processor delivers significant performance gains for use in home computing, business solutions and all your processing needs.
The Pentium 4 processor is designed to give you superior performance for digital music, 3D gaming, digital imaging and video, and more. In addition, it provides you with enough power to handle innovations on the horizon such as DVD authoring and MPEG4 video.
For business desktop PCs, it delivers the enhanced productivity, performance and stability demanded by today's business workers and IT managers. The high-performance Pentium 4 processor can enrich the business solutions and applications you will be deploying today and tomorrow and can help you work better, smarter and faster.
Mobile AMD Athlon 64-bit
The Mobile AMD Athlon 64-bit processor offers technical superiority for 32-bit performance and 64-bit capabilities along with mobility features. If you want your computer to give you top-notch performance, keep you in touch with work and home, offer features that let you enjoy computing, and run long enough to get through your busy schedule - the AMD processor is for you. With AMD 64 technology you can preserve your investment in existing solutions while gaining the ability to adopt tomorrow's 64-bit solutions. You can mix and match 32-and 64-bit software, and get outstanding performance on both. Currently, Eurocom offers AMD Athlon 64-bit processor on D470K and D400K models.
RAM ( Random Access Memory )
RAM is used by the computer's operating system to store working data and program information. More RAM icreases your computer's performance by enabling your computer to run more applications at the same time. The more RAM you have the faster your applications will run. Lots of RAM is essential for working with graphics or heavy computing. EUROCOM computers support up to 1 GB of RAM.
RAM comes in a variety of types. Please note that you must have the right type in the right configuration to work properly with your motherboard. There are two basic types of RAM: dynamic RAM (DRAM) and static RAM (SRAM).
The most common RAM terminology describes the following:
* Packaging design: SIMM (single in-line memory module, 72-pin) or DIMM (dual in-line memory module, 168-pin) describe the physical packaging and the type of connector used.
* Performance characteristics: EDO (extended data out), SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and DDR RAM (double data rate RAM) refer to read/write performance characteristics.
* Speed: A designation of 70 nanosecond (ns) or 60 ns refers to the speed, with smaller numbers indicating faster RAM.
* Size: The final designation is 64 MB, 128 MB, etc., referring to the capacity of the module.
* Type: PC133 RAM is faster than PC100 RAM, for example, and PC266 DDR RAM is designed for 266 MHz motherboards where DDR means double speed rate of data transfer.
Video Memory
Video memory is important for better graphics and multimedia performance, basically for everything controlled by a video chip. The more video memory the more data and colors can be stored. A 32-bit color, for example, means that there are 32 bits per pixel. A resolution of 1024 by 768 by 32 indicates how much video RAM is needed to run a system at this resolution. The EUROCOM high end models offer 128 and 256 MB of DDR video. It's rendering capability is few times more than that of current laptops. The D900T model offers upgradeable video with PC Express technology.
Hard Drive
Large hard drive allows more space for storing files and applications. Most applications require 20 to 70 MB while graphics and MP3 files can take 100 MB and more. Video files are often many gigabytes in size. If you play computer games, download audio and video files (i.e. movies) or work with graphics, you will need a large hard drive. With files growing larger and hard drives becoming bigger, faster, and more affordable, it makes good economic sense to buy a hard drive with enough capacity to last.
The EUROCOM high end models support 2 physical hard drives offering up to 200 GB of storage with RAID 0 and 1 fault tolerance technology. The D900T model offers Hard Drives supporting Serial ATA drives.
Optical Drive (CD-ROM to DVD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW Combo or SuperDrive DVD Burner) drive
Internal DVD-ROM
Get a 8x DVD-ROM to enjoy your personal DVD movie theatre built right into your notebook. Admire picture and sound clearer than that on your VCR. A DVD movie can be played over and over again with no wear and tear on the video and audio quality. DVD also plays CDs. It's capable of holding 4.7 GB of information (up to 25 times more information than a CD) and its information access speed is nine times as fast. The keyword in DVD means "versatile." Digital Versatile Discs provide superb video, audio and data storage and access - all on one disc.
Internal CD Burner
You need the CD-RW (CD-recordable/CD-rewritable) drive if you want to back up your data or burn your own Cds. It's as simple as a floppy with all the qualities of CD! Revolutionary new CD-ReWritable technology lets you use CD-RW discs just like a big floppy - up to 650 MB! You can write, erase, rewrite and update all your large files on CD. Use them over and over again. Make weekly backups of your hard drive. Or transport files between work and home.
Internal DVD/CD-RW Combo
A Combo drive is a DVD player and a CD burner in one single module. So get a life after work and watch DVD movies and burn CDs on your notebook at lunch break or while on the road! The Combo drive also plays audio CDs.
Internal DVD Burner
Based on the DVD-+R/-+RW (DVD Recordable and ReWritable) format, the DVD Burner drives support the most widely compatible DVD standard, giving consumers the highest level of compatibility with legacy DVD devices. The slim line drive is made by Toshiba and weights just 0.2 kg.
The DVD technology has already replaced videotape and will eventually replace CD-ROM/RW to become de facto standard for home entertainment and lifestyle computing. A DVD Burner drive is a sound investment for consumers wanting to make a simple transition from CD to DVD technology.
DVD-R: Its capacity is 4.7 gigabytes. Originally designed for professional authoring, a version for general consumer use is now under development. As with CD-R, users can write only once to this disk.
DVD-RAM: This makes DVD a virtual hard disk, with a random read-write access. Originally a 2.6-gigabyte drive, its capacity has increased to 4.7-gigabyte-per-side. It can be re-written more than 100,000 times.
DVD-RW: Similar to DVD-RAM except that its technology features a sequential read-write access more like a phonograph than a hard disk. Its read-write capacity is 4.7 gigabytes per side. It can be re-written up to about 1,000 times.

    Linux
Why use Linux as your second OS? There are many reasons to incorporate Linux into your daily life, not the least of which is the low cost of running the system. Its source code is available free of charge and it's extremely stable. As Linux gains greater acceptance world-wide, Eurocom intends to be there to support it, by giving the option of having both operating systems on the notebook. To really enjoy all that a dual-boot operating system can offer: faster speed, more stability, and more control, Eurocom recommends using the 8500, 5100, or 3100 series to get the most out of your notebook. We are currently testing all new EUROCOM models for Linux compatibility.
