New Mobile Hardware Solutions Can Increase Staff Productivity

Around the world, mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular and widespread. Look around and you will see tablets, smartphones, ultrabooks and netbooks being used by everyone.

But what if you are a professional, managing large data sets, running multiple virtual machines, designing the next generation of products or technologies, collecting and analyzing environmental data or monitoring large amounts of incoming variables? You will clearly need much more capable and powerful hardware than the average consumer.

The work of engineers, designers, operators and managers of municipal water and wastewater treatment systems, stormwater management, industrial/hazardous waste management and air pollution can be made easier and more productive by the use of capable mobile hardware. Teams, working with mobile workstations on their customers’ sites or anywhere outside their offices, need a system to run multiple applications on multiple operating systems.

Eurocom has assisted many organizations with a strategy called “Engineeringon-the Go”. When utilized properly, it can greatly reduce organizational costs while improving a company’s ability to adapt to challenges.

On Page 58 of the Magazines Digital Edition, you will find the article.

Eurocom Panther 2.0 Core i7, SLI notebook

Eurocom describes the Panther 2 as "the ultimate mobile workstation" and cetainly does well to live up to this claim given its blistering performance matched by an eye watering price tag.

The fun's not over yet, though. Withing the Panther 2.0 is sound system featuring five speakers including a sub woofer built into the base of the chassis. It’s really rather good too – loud enough in volume although to my ears a tad on the bright side but the Realtek HD audio manager features a multitude of adjustments to suit personal tastes.

As the Panther is really a mobile workstation, some muscle flexing seemed in order. It took 1m 43s to open a 3.3GB, 275dpi image in Photoshop. To re-render the image up to 600dpi took just 15 minutes, producing a 16GB file in the process. I then did a full resolution composite and save to the hard drive which took just over 17 minutes – impresseive. For a run-of-the-mill desktop PC, you could be looking at an hour or so for these sorts of rendering tasks.

EUROCOM Panther 3.0 Desktop Replacement Laptop Review- Tested with AMD Radeon HD6990M CrossFireX and NVIDIA Geforce GTX 580M SLI

Looking first at the build quality and design of the EUROCOM Panther 3.0 we have a system which is very impressive. Clearly using the highest specification components requires a large chassis but it looks decent with the minimalist lighting adding to a nice brushed metal finish. The unit is packed with quality branded components from Samsung memory through Intel SSDs to the i7 CPU and AMD/NVIDIA graphics. Even the wireless card is a level above that offered by most manufacturers with this particular model designed to optimise gaming performance.

There are a couple of minor issues though, a screen which doesn't have the best viewing angles we have seen, though for single users it does offer great clarity and brightness. And a PSU which could do with being 350w rather than 300w just to offer that extra peace of mind for those on the highest system configuration. Eurocom inform us they are working on higher capacity PSUs however in the mean time offer a combination of 2x300w models if requested. That said there are four screens available (along with professional calibration) in the configuration options for those who want an alternate specification and this further emphasises the great flexibility of component choice which open to upgrades in the future too.

This high specification mix of components, and specifically those in our review unit, offer a fantastic level of performance for productivity tasks. We have never seen performance this high from a mobile/desktop replacement system and the fact that EUROCOM have kept noise levels reasonable, even when under heavy use is great. Looking specifically at gaming the Panther 3.0 performed pretty much flawlessly in our tests. It allowed us to increase our resolution and detail levels to their maximum settings and play the latest games with smooth performance.

GeForce GTX 580M SLI Vs. Radeon HD 6990M CrossFire inside EUROCOM Panther 2.0

A thick arm, a fat wallet, and a little technical knowledge are all that stands between you and portable gaming paradise. System builder and hardware co-developer Eurocom makes it that easy to get a top-end gaming configuration, with a bit of help from its chassis and GPU partners.

Central to its efforts, the aged Panther 2 chassis now houses Intel’s desktop-class (130 W) Core i7-990X hexa-core processor, in addition to a pair of MXM-based graphics cards.

Since today’s article compares the latest mobile GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD, Eurocom also included a pair of GeForce GTX 580M graphics cards. That’s a $581 upgrade for most buyers, yet it barely compares to the sexy $1755 hard drive upgrade already installed in the configuration that showed up at our door. If you were really worried about pinching pennies on this thing, you could cut the price by $268 and choose a one-year warranty instead.

Moreover, if you really want to switch graphics modules around, you'll need the different GPU heat sinks. All of these parts arrived separately so that we could experience the upgrade process available to any owner of an X7200-based chassis. Eurocom even sells alternative upgrade components if you own a Dell or HP notebook, for example, and would like to upgrade.

Review GeForce GTX 580M SLI vs. Radeon HD 6990M CF inside EUROCOM Panther 3.0

Let us start with the test system: the 17 inch Panther 3.0 (provided by Eurocom) is a desktop replacement notebook (which is apparent from its weight of 6 kgs). Accordingly, Eurocom does not fit the laptop with a mobile processor, such as the popular Core i7-2630QM, but instead they have thrown in a hexa-core desktop CPU: the Core i7-990X (3.46 to 3.73 GHz) - one of the fastest processors available. Thanks to the Hyperthreading technology, the CPU can process up to 12 threads simultaneously.

The RAM and hard disks of the laptop are also high-end: 12 GB of DDR3-RAM and three lightning-fast Solid State Drives in RAID 0 mode (Intel 510 SSDs) ensure excellent program performance. Of course, the price for this configurations is equally "high-end": 5400 Euros (HD 6970M CF) and 5900 Euro (GTX 580M SLI) are prices which will dissuade most buyers.

Computing for the Mobile Engineer -- Engineers on the move need more than just a single laptop.

Engineers have always had to travel to where their projects are located. Whether the project is a major construction effort, or a collaboration on an automotive or aerospace system, design engineers may spend anywhere from a few days to months at a time away from their normal business offices. There are also consulting engineers who spend virtually all of their time traveling from one project to the next.

But the computing power a mobile engineer needs has been difficult to come by. Today, some high-end laptops can make acceptable engineering workstations.

The Intel Core i7 quad-core processor includes an eight-way multi-tasking capability and additional L3 cache for speeding up data and instruction transfers. These processors also use Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading technology for added computation performance. Many of these systems also incorporate NVIDIA graphics processing units, which can also be used to execute applications designed to make use of fast GPUs. And while these systems often top out at only 8GB of memory, that's enough for many types of designs.

    Review: Eurocom Panther 2.0 notebook-Computing.co.uk

    "Verdict:
A stunning workstation-class notebook and capable of handling most intensive computing tasks"

"Eurocom Corporation's workstation-class Panther 2.0 notebook combines eye-watering performance with a form-factor that is portable,"

"Because it’s portable, the Panther 2.0 system is ideal for users needing specific applications on remote sites for temporary periods of time."

    "Conclusions
We were very impressed with Eurocom's Panther 2.0 notebook, and it handled all the computational tasks we threw at it easily.

Technical applications requiring large datasets to be held in system memory will benefit from the 24GB of triple-channel system memory. However, datasets requiring fast read/writes to the system disks will benefit from the RAID 0 triple SSDs."

    Eurocom Panther 2.0 Review-Maximum PC

"this mobile workstation is the fastest, most flexible system you’ll find anywhere."

"It’s not the 17-inch monitor, though, that sets this machine apart. The size and weight are necessary to support the power and features of a desktop PC. The rig is engineered to run desktop and workstation-class CPUs; our test system sported a Core i7-980X Extreme running at 3.33GHz with six cores, but the platform supports Xeon processors as well. Two AMD Radeon HD 6970M XT graphics cards, each with 2GB of GDDR5, work together with CrossFire technology."

"Our test system included 12GB of RAM and two drives, one 256GB solid-state drive and one 500GB 7,200rpm hybrid drive. If that’s not enough, there’s room to expand with two more, and the system supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configurations. Even the CPU and graphics cards can be upgraded; this is one of the most expandable and upgradeable mobile systems we’ve ever tested.

As you’d expect from those specs, the system blew through our tests. Whether in CPU, graphics, or I/O-intensive tasks, it will run with all but the top overclocked, gaming desktop machines. Upping the resolution on our Call of Duty 4 test to 1920x1080 didn’t even phase this system; it still delivered 191fps. The only test where it fell down was the battery drain test; we only made it through 30 minutes of a DVD before the battery gave up."
